ENIGMA - THE CROSS OF CHANGES - SECOND ALBUM (1993) - 58 MB

REVIEW :

Cretu being no fool, he figured if it worked the first time, no need to change things much for the second. But he also knew not to simply go ahead and just rehash his debut for Cross of Changes, resulting in a just different enough effort along the same overall lines. The usual air of tasteful middle-of-the-road spirituality takes precedence, right down to the cover art and appropriately pantheistic quote from Persian mystic poet Rumi in the CD booklet. Needless to say, the music attempts to match the same throughout, and often succeeds. Things kick off with more of the synth-whale song noises and atmospherics from MCMXC, however there aren't any monks to be found this time around, but what sounds like the same whispering woman talking about "clearing the debts of many hundred years" and the like. From there, Cretu merrily takes the same plunge — some of his sample choices this time around show he's got a decent record collection, including parts from Songs From the Victorious City, the striking fusion of Egyptian and Western musics from Anne Dudley and Jaz Coleman. His work with beats and loops noticeably shows a more developed edge — while hardly an innovator, there's a bit more grime and loud in his rhythms, which in combination with extra electric guitar make a reasonable contrast to the smoother elements. Consider the rampaging conclusion to "I Love You...I'll Kill You," which while sharing some cheese with the title itself still works surprisingly well, right down to a clever Robert Plant vocal sample at the end. "Return to Innocence" was the big single from this one, not quite up there with "Sadeness" in the popular culture in the U.S. but almost inescapable elsewhere. There's another Led Zeppelin sample (this time John Bonham) and a haunting male vocal providing oomph under the fuzzy-headed greeting card philosophy of the main lyrics. It's an impressive effort, showing Cretu had a definite something in his own way.

ENIGMA - MCMXC AD LIMITED EDITION - FIRST ALBUM -
(1990)
- 101 MB

REVIEW :

Michael Crétu's attempt at fusing everything from easy listening sex music and hip-hop rhythms to centuries-old Gregorian chants couldn't have been more designed to tweak the nose of high art, a joyously crass stab straight at a mainstream, do not pass go, do not collect 200 dollars. The result is something that shouldn't exist, but in its own way results in as much of a cultural scramble and explosion as anything Public Enemy were doing around the same time, crossing over the Euro-disco and new age spheres with style. Credit Crétu for an open ear for whatever works, which is precisely why "Sadeness," the first part of a longer track called "Principles of Lust," turned into a fluke worldwide hit. Snippets of monks invoking the Almighty effortlessly glide in and out of a polite but still strong breakbeat, shimmering, atmospheric synth and flute lines and a Frenchwoman whispering in a way that sounds distinctly more carnal than spiritual (as her gasps for breath elsewhere make clear). Guitar and male vocals add to the album version's try-anything-that-works approach, as do attempts at shuffling jazz beats and horns. If nothing quite equals that prime moment elsewhere on the album, MCMXC A.D. still trips out on the possibilities as it can, right from the opening "Voice of Enigma," inviting all listeners to sit back, relax, and take a gentle trip. Crétu certainly isn't trying to hide anything — "Callas Went Away" goes right ahead and adds a sample of Maria Callas herself to the chirping birds and soft beats, while elsewhere the flutes, beats, monks, and French voices merrily go about their glossy business. About the only thing missing is the kitchen sink, making the entire album the "MacArthur Park" of its day.

DIDO - NO ANGEL

REVIEW :

The title notwithstanding, this debut from the former Faithless singer is pretty angelic-sounding stuff. You're bound to think of Sinéad O'Connor, but the comparison is as misleading as it is inevitable. Granted, Dido's ethereal vocals here frequently recall O'Connor; but Dido's music -- while inventively augmented with electronics -- is generally less adventurous. Ditto No Angel's lyrics, which focus almost exclusively on love, lust, and relationships. That said, the fact remains that this is an auspicious and highly listenable album -- atmospheric, seductive, and beautifully produced and sequenced. [The import edition adds a five-track bonus disc that includes remixes of "Thank You," "Here with Me," and "Hunter"]

Pirates of the Caribbean Trilogy (Original Soundtrack -
Full Collection) - 59 MB + 80 MB + 76 MB = 215 MB

REVIEW :

During a week where new soundtracks from James Newton Howard and Brian Tyler arrived on the scene, I instead opted for a purchase that featured music that I've heard multiple times before. Call me crazy, but I couldn't resist buying the music from the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, as performed by the Prague Philharmonic.
When I interviewed Hans Zimmer during the summer of 2007, he mentioned that there was a wealth of orchestral 'Pirates' material in the Remote Control archives, but he made no mention of any plans to release it commercially. Thankfully, Silva Screen has developed a soundtrack that features the music from all three films in an orchestral and choral format. As big as a fan as I am of James Newton Howard and Brian Tyler, "Michael Clayton" and "Finishing the Game" could wait.
Typically, the Prague re-recordings make for a terrific option for film music lovers. Not only do they offer selections of relevant and classic work, but often times their re-recordings present a slightly different take on the music that we enjoy. While this works especially well for some of the older, classic scores (to have an updated recording), it also serves the modern works well too, offering highlights that are arranged nicely on their album releases.
The music from 'Pirates,' as mentioned earlier, presents material from all the films to date. The soundtrack runs in sequential order from the first film on to the third, which really makes for one heck of an adventure. All of the main themes from each movie are well accounted for; as usual, the team did their homework in selecting the best possible moments from each of the scores. What makes this album shine, however, and what should motivate you to buy this even if you own the original discs, is the chance to hear the works presented in a purely orchestral manner. The electronic resources that Zimmer's team had employed are set aside for this compilation, making for more of an organic sound.
In my opinion, the music from the Pirates trilogy doesn't get its just due. Forgetting about what instruments and synths were used in the original recordings, it's simply great music. I think one gains a deeper appreciation of that after hearing this compilation version. From the 'Curse of the Black Pearl' to 'At World's End,' all the favorites are included here. While true, there are times that the tempo is a bit slower than I would have liked with certain cues, overall this is a satisfying and exciting soundtrack.
In my opinion, the best material, as heard here, is from the first and third films (though hearing an orchestral version of 'The Kraken' was quite different and interesting to listen to). More specifically, the finest moment of the release is from 'At World's End,' with the cue entitled, 'Up is Down.' The string section really excels with this cue and the instruments are beautiful to listen to as they engage the colorful melodies of the track. The action suite from 'At World's End' is also a distinct highlight as it brings together a culmination of themes that were employed for the third film. I must also state that it was refreshing to hear the choral aspects that are included. This demonstrates how valuable a live choir can be to accentuate and enhance the sound of music like this.
My only complaint about the work here harkens back to the pacing. I've noticed that on Prague recordings, the tempo is slower than it should be with certain performances. Best examples of that is the re-recording of John Williams' prequels work, with 'Duel of the Fates' and the 'Battle of the Heroes' suffering from damaging pacing. I noticed this sluggishness with the excerpts from 'Curse of the Black Pearl' on this release, with the fast moving action cues as an example. Had the pacing been there in that area, I would have given this release a perfect 10 for 10. As it is, perfection is a rarity and this is still a high value release.
In conclusion, the musical fabric from the Pirates films will always be debated by traditionalists and naysayers alike. In my opinion, they're missing out. The scores from Klaus Badelt, Hans Zimmer and his team make for a truly entertaining journey with vibrant melodies, adventurous themes and a fearless approach. This is all on full display with "The Music from the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy," a score that no swashbuckler should be without.

GARDEN STATE (VARIOUS ARTIST - ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK)
-Mp3 FORMAT- 70 MB

REVIEW :

Writer and director Zach Braff does a masterful job matching the charming, heartfelt tone of films like The Graduate and Rushmore in his motion picture debut, Garden State, so it only makes sense that the music he personally compiled for the soundtrack plays just as of big a part here as it did in those films. Simon & Garfunkel's languorous "The Only Living Boy in New York" is an obvious thread, but aside from Nick Drake's "One of These Things First," Braff is able to carry the mood without getting tripped up in the past. Frou Frou's "Let Go" and Zero 7's "In the Waiting Line" supply soft techno touches, while Iron & Wine's "Such Great Heights" and former Men at Work singer Colin Hay's "I Just Don't Think I'll Ever Get Over You" offer understated angst. It's the pair of emotionally racked contributions from the Shins ("Caring Is Creepy," "New Slang"), however, that really make this compilation a must-have

THE DARK KNIGHT (ORIGINAL MOVIE SCORE)-Mp3 Format-
320kbps - 119 MB

REVIEW :

Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard's score for The Dark Knight is the best soundtrack CD out in a while. The music is dark and moody but exciting enough to listen to without succumbing to depression. And at well over an hour long, it also delivers its money's worth, and then some. This is no 45-minute selection of background music, this is a powerhouse score that commands your attention.

Especially good is the electronic-esque theme for the Joker, which dominates the first track, "Why so Serious?" and eerily crops up throughout the rest of the score. Zimmer has said in interviews that he based on the Joker's sound on Kraftwerk, an electronica band from his native Germany. When I first read this I wondered what kind of odd sound this would create, but fortunately there's nothing odd about it whatsoever. It sounds something like Kraftwerk and other European electronica, certainly, but also much like Zimmer's work on Black Hawk Down and is not the least bit off-putting. It perfectly mirrors the Joker--jarring, alternately quiet and loud but always moving, and captivating.

The rest of the score expands on themes from the soundtrack of Batman Begins and introduces a lot more new stuff, from the aforementioned theme for the Joker to somber but moving string sections alternating with heavy percussion and brass, especially in the final track, "A Dark Knight." Like I said, the score is very dark but compulsively listenable. I promise that you are going to have this in your mp3 player for months.

THE INCREDIBLE HULK (2 CD - ORIGINAL MOVIE SCORE)
Mp3 Format - 320kbps -151 MB

REVIEW :

Craig Armstrong's evocative score for The Incredible Hulk tells a listener much about the bearing of the movie it accompanies. Even without seeing it on a screen, the music is indelibly marked with both the color of night, and the tumultuous inner life of the titular character, trapped in his unshakable reality. While there are plenty of passages suffused with the increased pulse rate of dynamic action, much of this double disc set is potently emotional. There are tensions and momentary resolutions; there are longings punctuated by islands of fleeting calm. Rich and dense, the strength of this music is that it never loses sight of the solitary man at its center. Indeed, it is as if it takes the massed numbers of an entire symphony to equal the presence of The Incredible Hulk.

The Biggest Winner - Cardio Kickbox (AVI video -
348 MB)

REVIEW :

Jillian Michaels, the trainer from NBC's The Biggest Loser and self-proclaimed "TV's toughest fitness guru," runs through circuit training like a drill sergeant on caffeine. Her theory is to keep moving in between exercises to burn twice as many calories, so she cycles her team through sumo squats, mountain climbers, jump ropes, shoulder raises and bicycle moves without taking a breath. If she doesn't think one of her comrades is picking up his knees high enough, she makes everyone do 30 more, with a sadistic grin. As a result, you can almost literally watch the muscle burn. Despite a lower-level option, it isn't for anyone looking for a low-impact aerobic workout. Follow the exercise and lose the extra pounds....

AUDIO BOOK - 100 WAYS TO MOTIVATE YOURSELF - 84 MB

REVIEW :

100 Ways to Motivate Yourself is definitely one of the better self-help / leadership books I have listened. The one part of this book that is quite unique is that Chandler often starts with a quote, then he presents an typical example and finally tells a brief short story. I find this to be quite refreshing in these types of books as Chandler covered a wide array of topics from taking action, looking at things from a different angle, using your imagination, setting goals, turning off your TV, relationships, etc.

I believe the key ingredient in getting long-term value out of this book is to highlight the quotes/stories you love and integrate them into your daily life. Practice what you read if it ties in with your values. Hope this helps everyone.

INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF CRYSTAL SKULL
(2008) -
AXXO - DVDRip - 715 MB

REVIEW :

Nearly 20 years after riding his last Crusade, Harrison Ford makes a welcome return as archaeologist/relic hunter Indiana Jones in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, an action-packed fourth installment that's, in a nutshell, less memorable than the first three but great nostalgia for fans of the series. Producer George Lucas and screenwriter David Koepp (War of the Worlds) set the film during the cold war, as the Soviets--replacing Nazis as Indy's villains of choice and led by a sword-wielding Cate Blanchett with black bob and sunglasses--are in pursuit of a crystal skull, which has mystical powers related to a city of gold. After escaping from them in a spectacular opening action sequence, Indy is coerced to head to Peru at the behest of a young greaser (Shia LaBeouf) whose friend--and Indy's colleague--Professor Oxley (John Hurt) has been captured for his knowledge of the skull's whereabouts. Whatever secrets the skull holds are tertiary; its reveal is the weakest part of the movie, as the CGI effects that inevitably accompany it feel jarring next to the boulder-rolling world of Indy audiences knew and loved. There's plenty of comedy, delightful stunts--ants play a deadly role here--and the return of Raiders love interest Karen Allen as Marion Ravenwood, once shrill but now softened, giving her ex-love bemused glances and eye-rolls as he huffs his way to save the day. Which brings us to Ford: bullwhip still in hand, he's a little creakier, a lot grayer, but still twice the action hero of anyone in film today. With all the anticipation and hype leading up to the film's release, perhaps no reunion is sweeter than that of Ford with the role that fits him as snugly as that fedora hat.

THE INCREDIBLE HULK [2008] DvDrip - AXXO - 700 mb

REVIEW :

A more accessible and less heavy-handed movie than Ang Lee's 2003 Hulk..Louis Leterrier's The Incredible Hulk
is a purely popcorn love affair with Marvel's raging, green superhero, as well as the old television series starring Bill Bixby as Dr. David Banner and Lou Ferrigno as the beast within him. Edward Norton takes up where Eric Bana left off in Lee's version, playing Bruce (that's the character's original name) Banner, a haunted scientist always on the move. Trying to eliminate the effects of a military experiment that turns him into the Hulk whenever his emotions get the better of him, Banner is hiding out in Brazil at the film's beginning. Working in a bottling plant and communicating via email with an unidentified professor who thinks he can help, Banner goes postal when General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross and a small army turn up to grab him. Intent on developing whatever causes Banner's metamorphoses into a weapon, Ross brings along a quietly der! anged soldier named Emil Blonsky (Tim Roth), who wants Ross to turn him into a supersoldier who can take on the Hulk. The adventure spreads to the U.S., where Banner hooks up with his old lover (and Ross' daughter), Betty (Liv Tyler), and where the Hulk takes on several armed assaults, including one in a pretty unusual location: a college campus. The film's action is impressive, though the computer-generated creature is disappointingly cartoonish, and a second monster turning up late in the movie looks even cheesier. Norton is largely wasted in the film--he's essentially a bridge between sequences where he disappears and the Hulk rampages around. As good an actor as he is, Norton doesn't have the charisma here to carry those scenes in which one waits impatiently for the real show to begin.

DEATH RACE UNRATED BLU-RAY RIP - MKV Format - 400 MB

Review :

Mayhem rules in Death Race, a head-over-heels remake of the Roger Corman cult classic Death Race 2000, in which cars become lethal weapons. The strength of this new version is its total single-mindedness about vehicular homicide; it has the virtue of no cluttering subplots or simpering sentimentality. And banish all memory of the original's wild satirical comedy: Death Race is as grim as a dinner tray to the face (a reference that will be explained in a key sequence). In a slightly futuristic maximum-security prison, cons take part in brutal races around the island prison, their violent deaths watched live by millions of viewers. Jason Statham, possibly cast because of his driving dexterity in the Transporter movies, plays a man wrongly imprisoned for murder. Joan Allen provides her brittle cool as the warden, who recruits Statham to assume the masked persona of a legendary driver called Frankenstein. Tyrese Gibson is Frankie's main rival, Natalie Martinez provides the fetching eye candy, but the acting honors go to Ian McShane, as the philosophical prison mechanic. One misses the cross-country race from the original film, as the setting here is claustrophobic and the cars are largely colorless and indistinguishable from each other. Director Paul W.S. Anderson (Resident Evil) continues to display the sensibility of a video-game addict, which will either be a recommendation or a turn-off, depending on your own tastes. At least it doesn't have the hypocritical moral blathering of something like the somewhat similar Condemned--who knew you could be so grateful for simple, straight-forward head-bashing?
